It’s unfortunate to be in a pedestrian accident anywhere, but you probably are at least partially aware of the risk in certain areas of Spokane. At the same time, not everyone that’s on foot has the same ability to avoid an accident. And it’s even worse if the driver that collides with you flees the scene.
A 78-year-old woman was identified as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run accident on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, according to a story from KHQ. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office said the woman died of blunt force injuries after she was hit by a car on North Browne Street and West Main Avenue in Downtown Spokane.
The Spokane Police Department (SPD) have yet to find the driver of the vehicle. The SPD’s original investigation found the woman at the scene with life-threatening injuries. She later died at the hospital. Anyone with any information on the accident is being asked to contact Spokane County Crime Check.
How Do Pedestrian Accidents Turn Fatal?
It’s not all that surprising that many pedestrians in Spokane suffer serious injuries in accidents. But like the story above shows, certain pedestrians–particularly older people who aren’t as mobile as younger pedestrians–are more vulnerable to injuries in accidents. Worse yet, any pedestrian accident carries the risk of injuries that can turn fatal.
This is largely due to the lack of protection a pedestrian has against a moving vehicle. And when the person driving the car flees the scene, it makes the entire legal process harder. Still, some of the more common injuries that you can expect to deal with in these accidents include:
- Head and brain injuries
- Broken bones
- Internal organ damage
- Spinal injuries
- Burns
- Blunt force trauma
In the most severe cases, pedestrian accidents can result in fatalities, with pedestrians being more likely to be killed than drivers or passengers.
If you’re injured in a pedestrian accident, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Additionally, gather information about the driver and document the accident with photos or videos, similar to what you would do in a car accident. Again, though, these steps aren’t possible when there’s a hit-and-run. Still, you have legal options and our Spokane pedestrian accident lawyers can help.
