No matter what the situation is, being in a motorcycle accident is one of the most problematic in terms of the damage. This is especially true if you’re the one riding the motorcycle, and it doesn’t really matter where or how the accident happens–it’s going to leave you with a lot to deal with. And even a seemingly minor collision can result in critical injuries.
That’s what happened with a recent collision in Spokane, according to a story from KREM 2. Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene of the accident at South Cheney Spokane Road on Sunday, April 27, 2025. There, they found the motorcycle and a pickup truck that was towing a small trailer. An initial investigation believed that both were traveling southbound near South Sherman Road, when the pickup truck slowed down to turn left. As the motorcycle tried to pass the truck, it collided with the driver’s side of the truck as it started to make the turn.
Paramedics on the scene transported the motorcycle rider to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the truck was unhurt. However, deputies found that he was driving with a suspended license, no interlock device, and had no proof of insurance. As of Sunday evening, the motorcyclist was still in the hospital in critical condition.
How Hurt Can You Get in a Motorcycle Accident?
As the story above shows, a motorcycle accident that happens when you collide with a car turning left is among the most serious in terms of the injuries. It’s not that difficult to see why: even if the other car isn’t moving at the time, you (the rider) have virtually no protection against the collision. This can leave you with injuries like:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) – Even with a helmet, a direct impact can lead to a concussion or more severe brain trauma that affects memory, speech, coordination, and more.
- Internal injuries – Damage to your internal organs can result from blunt force trauma and may not be immediately visible, requiring emergency medical care.
- Broken bones – High-impact crashes frequently lead to fractures to your arms, legs, ribs, or pelvis–sometimes needing surgery and long-term rehab.
- Neck and back injuries – You might be facing neck and back injuries, ranging from herniated discs to spinal trauma. These can cause chronic pain or limit your mobility.
- Muscle strains and soft tissue injuries – Your ligaments, tendons, and muscles can be torn or overstretched in a crash, leading to limited movement and extended recovery times.
- Whiplash – A sudden jolt from the collision can strain neck muscles and soft tissues, causing headaches, stiffness, and discomfort.
- Road rash – This happens when your skin is exposed and slides across pavement. More severe road rash wounds could require skin grafts and surgeries to protect you against infections.
Even the “less severe” injuries can be painful, costly, and disruptive. Recovery may involve weeks or months of medical care, lost income, and emotional distress.
