And those disadvantages only increase when drivers are impaired by alcohol or drugs. That’s what led to a fatal collision on Saturday, September 12, 2026, according to a story from KREM.
Spokane Valley Police Department (SVPD) deputies and Spokane Valley Fire and AMR medics responded to reports of a collision between a car and pedestrian at the 100 Block of South Flora Road around 12:35 a.m. EMTs found that the pedestrian was in fact a person riding a scooter. They attempted life-saving procedures, and were able to restore the man’s pulse. He was taken to a hospital for further care, but later died of his injuries.
SVPD deputies say the driver of the vehicle that hit the scooter, an 18-year-old man, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation into the collision. Police believe the 18-year-old was driving south on Flora Road when he collided with the man on the scooter, who was headed east on Appleway Trail. The initial collision resulted in several life-threatening injuries to the man on the scooter. As police continued to question the driver of the car, they began to suspect that he was impaired. This was later confirmed by both a field sobriety test conducted by the SVPD Drug Recognition Experts, as well as blood test results. He was charged with DUI and Vehicular Homicide.
