Three Injured, One in Coma Following Multi-Vehicle Crash in Spokane Valley

July 26, 2024

There’s a lot of different car accident scenarios you have to be ready for in Spokane Valley. But unfortunately, you can’t prepare for everything–and it’s often in these instances where the worst crashes happen.

Three people in a Honda were injured, one of whom is in a coma, when they were hit by a man who was fleeing from Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies in a spray-painted Subaru, according to a story from KREM.

The crash happened on Friday, July 19, 2024, according to a statement from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO). Investigators say the driver of the Subaru ran a red light while driving east on Sprague Avenue and had no license plates. As the Subaru ran the red light, it crashed into the Honda that was heading south on McDonald Road, which also collided with a Toyota truck.

The driver of the Honda suffered critical injuries, while the two passengers were also injured. One is in a coma from his life-threatening injuries and the other’s injuries were considered non-life threatening. The driver of the Toyota truck also suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Subaru was charged with vehicular assault and attempting to flee from a law enforcement vehicle. SCSO is still investigating the accident.

Can You File an Injury Claim as a Passenger in Spokane?

It’s unfortunate, but accidents like the one above show just how devastating a car accident can be for everyone involved, including passengers. In fact, sometimes it’s the passenger that suffers the brunt of the injuries and damage in a car accident.

As a passenger, you have the same rights to file an injury claim as you would if you were the driver in a car accident. This means that you also have the same responsibilities as any other injury victim, namely you have to figure out who’s responsible for the accident–and who you have to file your claim against. Like any other car accident, you have to do this by proving negligence, or showing that:

  • The person responsible had a duty to keep you safe.
  • They failed to fulfill this duty.
  • This failure led to the accident.
  • The accident caused your injuries.

Typically, in a passenger injury case, potential responsible parties include:

  • The driver of the vehicle you’re in
  • Another driver involved
  • Either car or parts manufacturers
  • Government agencies

Who is responsible for your damages depends on the details of your accident. Insurance and your injuries also matter. Even with these factors, you can file an injury claim and seek damages from the at-fault party.
