One of the most frustrating things about a DUI is that it’s often the innocent victims that end up suffering the gravest consequences. And while everyone in the car is vulnerable, child passengers are especially so. This raises the stakes of any accident, including one that happened in Moses Lake on Sunday, August 4, 2024.
According to a story from KHQ, two adults and two children were taken to the hospital with injuries after another driver ran through a stop sign and collided with them at the intersection of Potato Frontage Road and State Route 17. Washington State Patrol (WSP) investigators believe that drugs and alcohol were a factor in the crash, with the driver that’s suspected of being under the influence also being injured.
Arrests have yet to be made, and WSP is still investigating the crash. The section of the highway that was closed for investigation has since been reopened.
What Should You Do After a DUI Accident?
The aftermath of a DUI accident is usually heightened and very frightening. But as an injury victim, there’s still vital steps to take relating to a potential claim. Yet, when the other driver is under the influence, it makes things more difficult. That’s where you need to be proactive, or if you’re too injured, have our team to lean on. Here’s what needs to be done:
- Call 911 – Always contact emergency services right after a DUI accident in Spokane. This ensures that local police (usually WSP) and EMTs can quickly assess the situation and provide necessary care. Be sure to mention if you suspect the driver was under the influence, even if your injuries seem minor.
- Document the scene – Gather evidence and make notes if you think the driver was intoxicated. Observe their behavior, record their statements, and look for signs of alcohol, such as empty bottles or the smell of alcohol.
- Cooperate with any investigations – When speaking with police, describe the events and explain why you believe the driver was impaired. The police will conduct DUI tests and may arrest the driver if they are found to be intoxicated.
- Get further medical care – If an ambulance doesn’t take you to the hospital, visit a doctor right after the accident. Medical records will connect the drunk driver’s actions to your injuries.
Stay calm and focus on your health and safety first. Everything else usually falls into place, but don’t hesitate to reach out to our Spokane DUI accident lawyers with any questions. We’re here to help you understand your next steps.
