Pedestrian Injured In Spokane Hit-And-Run

July 19, 2018
A Spokane hit-and-run collision involving a green pickup truck severely injured one pedestrian on July 17, 2018.

According to KREM-4, this crash happened around 12PM between South Monroe Street and West Sprague Avenue. As the female pedestrian was walking across the street, a truck turned from Sprague to Monroe, allegedly struck the pedestrian, and continued driving south.

Thankfully, eyewitnesses saw the woman injured in the street and called local authorities. First-responders transported the crash victim to a local hospital where she is expected to survive her injuries.

Members of the Spokane Police Department are now trying to find the driver involved in this hit-and-run crash. Officers believe the vehicle involved in this crash was a green 90s model Ford pickup truck with an extended cab. If you have any information on this accident, please call (509) 456-2233.

Hit-And-Run Fatalities Skyrocket

Sadly, hit-and-run collisions are on the rise all across the country. A recent report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that the number of total deaths from hit-and-run collisions soared to 2,049 in 2016. That’s a massive 62 percent increase from hit-and-run fatalities in 2009.

The AAA data also shows that 65 percent of the hit-and-run victims killed in 2016 were either pedestrians or cyclists. Amazingly, 20 percent of all pedestrian fatalities in the last ten years were the result of hit-and-run accidents.

There are many possible explanations for this rise in hit-and-run fatalities, but most safety officials believe it correlates with the increase in distracted driving habits like texting while driving.

Pedestrians should keep in mind that most fatal accidents happen at night between 12AM and 4AM. If you must walk late at night, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends wearing bright clothing and/or lights to help drivers see you. Any pedestrians who like to listen to music while they walk should consider at least leaving one ear open to have a better sense of their surroundings.
