Newport WA Driver Causes Multiple Collisions, Sends Three People to Hospital

August 6, 2018

A rear-end collision on I-90 injured two Idaho drivers and one passenger on July 27, 2018.

According to The Spokesman-Review, the driver of a Toyota Tundra pickup allegedly struck the back of a Subaru Outback at milepost 11 around 3:30PM. This crash sent the Subaru into a construction area where it slammed into a traffic sign’s post. The Toyota, on the other hand, came to a stop in I-90’s eastbound lane.

Both drivers and one passenger in the Subaru were immediately transported to a local hospital. Thankfully, doctors expect the crash victims will survive their injuries.

Although the investigation into this crash is ongoing, police believe DUI might have been a factor. This Newport driver is suspected of causing several crashes throughout Idaho and Washington before this major crash.

Sobering Statistics: Drunk Driving In The USA

Unfortunately, DUI-related crashes are still a major cause of traffic fatalities in the USA. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 29 Americans die in an alcohol-related crash every day. This translates to over 10,400 traffic deaths per year.

Although one million Americans were arrested on DUI charges in 2016, safety experts believe there are far more DUI drivers on the roads. The CDC says approximately 111 million Americans self-report DUI on yearly surveys.

Besides alcohol, marijuana and other drugs (prescription-grade or not) are causing problems on America’s roadways. For instance, data from the CDC shows that marijuana use while driving is increasing, especially on weekends and at nighttime.
