When someone is driving while impaired, their depth perception is compromised and reaction time is dramatically delayed. This combination can often result in a head-on collision. This type of collision is among one of the deadliest. According to the NHTSA, head-on collisions make up only 2% of all accidents yet account for over 10% of all fatalities.
DUI Head-On Collision Takes a Life in Spokane Valley
A 66-year-old woman was killed Thursday night June 18, 2020 in an accident involving an impaired driver. She was the passenger in a Ford Taurus when a Chevy Silverado struck her head-on. According to the Washington State Patrol, the accident happened when the driver of the Silverado attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him but was unable to get back in time and collided with the Taurus.
The driver of the Taurus suffered serious injuries and was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center. Police have arrested the driver of the Silverado saying he was impaired from drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
Causes of Head-On Collisions
Simply put, a head-on happens because one of the two drivers involved made a critical mistake. Whether the driver crossed a double yellow line or entered a divided highway going in the wrong direction. The consequences of this mistake can be devastating and often deadly. Some of the ways head-on collisions occur are:
- Drifting across the double yellow line on a two-way highway,
- Impaired driving
- Distracted driving (cell, eating, etc.)
- Drowsy driving
- Passing a car in front of the driver,
- Entering a divided highway going the wrong direction
