At Least Four Passengers Injured When Double-Decker STA Bus Collides With Train Bridge in Spokane

January 19, 2026

When you step on a Spokane Transit Authority (STA) bus, you’re not really expecting an accident. And even if you’re in one, the bus itself is designed to handle most of the impact—usually. There’s only so much you can do in a collision, especially with something fixed. A recent story from KHQ details just how damaging such an accident can be.

On Sunday, January 18, 2026, several STA passengers were injured when a double-decker bus collided with a train bridge on 146 South Cedar Street in Spokane. STA officials said that the bus, which is over 13 feet tall, was traveling between Cheney and the University District. Around 12:30 p.m., it tried to run under the railroad viaduct, which has a clearance of 12 feet. The collision resulted in at least four passengers being injured and transported to a local hospital.

Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to the scene, and are currently investigating. STA is also working with the city government to address the damage to the train bridge.

What Steps Should I Take After an STA Bus Accident?

If you’ve been involved in an accident with a Spokane Transit Authority (STA) bus, things can get confusing fast. One minute you’re heading down Sprague or waiting at a stop, and the next you’re hurt and trying to figure out what just happened. Most people aren’t thinking about “claims” at that point—they’re thinking about pain, shock, and getting home.

Still, a few early steps can quietly make a big difference later, if you end up needing to file an injury claim.

  • Get checked out at a hospital or urgent care, even if you think you’re okay
  • Make sure someone officially documents what happened
  • Take a few photos/videos if you can
  • Keep your paperwork and medical records
  • Be careful with follow-up calls with authorities or insurance companies

No one expects to deal with an STA bus accident. But taking care of these small things early can give you more control at a time when everything feels uncertain.
