The most common accident is a rear-end collision according to a study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The majority of rear-end crashes do light to moderate damage to the vehicles involved and little to no injuries. However, a rear-end crash can also inflict serious and sometimes fatal injuries.

According to police the man driver wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, and EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.
Rear-End Accident Injuries
Each year, around 1.7 million rear-end crashes happen with 500,000 people being injured and 1,700 people die from their injuries. When a vehicle is impacted at its rear, the occupants are instantly pushed into the back of their seat, and then they are thrown violently forward. If they are pushed into another car, then another impact can increase the chance for an injury.
Some of the common injuries that come from a rear-end accident are:
- Whiplash: A whiplash, also called a thoracic spine injury, can happen to those in both the target car and the colliding car. The occupants are pushed one way then violently the other way causing their spine to stretch and then compress.
- Traumatic Brain Injuries: Head injuries are a significant risk in a rear-end collision, and happen because of the dynamics of the impact.
- Broken Facial Bones: Broken facial bones happen most often when front seat occupants hit the steering wheel or dash.
- Airbag injuries: Air bags are a good thing, but they can also cause injuries which can be severe. A malfunctioning airbag can send shrapnel into the victim, and even a properly functioning one can cause injuries.
