Like a lot of neighborhoods in Spokane, Hillyard is a great place to raise a family and enjoy the surroundings–especially on foot. But that can change quickly when you’re hit by a car. It happens more often than you might think, and even worse, drivers don’t always follow the law and stick around after the collision. And when these accidents turn fatal, like a recent story in the Spokesman-Review details, it adds a whole new layer of pain and stress.
According to the Spokane Police Department, a pedestrian died of their injuries after they were struck by a driver around 10:40 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025. The collision happened at the intersection of Freya Street and Everett Avenue in Hillyard. SPD deputies responded to the scene, but have not yet been able to locate the driver. Because the pedestrian died of their injuries, the Major Crimes Unit is investigating. The Spokane County Medical Examiner hasn’t released the name of the pedestrian yet, but is expected to do so in the coming days.

What Information Should You Get If You’re Hit by a Driver That Leaves the Scene?
When the driver flees the scene after hitting you–or any other pedestrian–it’s a huge problem. The whole point of hit-and-run laws is to make sure you and anyone else gets the information from the other person that they’ll need for a claim. Unfortunately, stories like the one above aren’t uncommon in Spokane. So, if you find yourself in a similar situation, it’s about getting as much information as you can. Here’s what to focus on:
- Driver/vehicle details. Even if the driver leaves, try to remember:
- The car’s color, make, and model.
 - The license plate number.
 - Any noticeable marks, dents, or stickers.
 - If you saw the driver, note their gender, age, and anything unique.

 - Details about the scene. Once everything settles down, try to get pictures/videos of the scene, and make note of:
- Where the accident happened.
 - Crosswalks, traffic signs, and street conditions.
 - Your injuries or anything that shows how the accident happened.

 - Medical records and notes. Write down any injuries right away, even if they seem small. Keep records of all doctor visits, hospital treatments, and prescriptions. This shows how the accident affected you and is important if you file a claim.
 - Witness information. Talk to anyone who saw the accident. Ask for their name and phone number. If they can, have them briefly explain what they saw and which way the car went. Witnesses can be very helpful in a hit-and-run.
