Motorcyclist Injured After Collision With Elderly Driver on US 2 in Spokane

May 28, 2025

Riding your motorcycle might feel exciting, but it comes with a lot of risks. While other drivers are the biggest risk most of the time, most are aware of you. But not every driver is the same–or has the same ability to see and account for you when you’re on your bike. This is especially true of older drivers, and that can lead to accidents like the one that recently happened in Spokane on US 2.

According to a story from KHQ, a 22-year-old motorcyclist suffered a broken leg when a 79-year-old driver collided with them on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Washington State Police (WSP) reported that the motorcyclist was traveling southbound on US 2 and had the right of way when the 79-year-old turned left on East Lane Park Road. The driver failed to yield and collided with the motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist was treated at the scene for a broken leg, and was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. The injury is non-life threatening. WSP said there was no impairment involved, and no charges are pending.

What Causes Motorcycle Accidents With Older Drivers?

Motorcycle accidents in Spokane happen for all kinds of reasons, but when older drivers are involved, there are some patterns that come up again and again–as the story above shows. Most of the time, it comes down to the challenges that come with aging:

  • Declining vision and hearing – One of the most common issues is a reduced ability to see or hear clearly. On a motorcycle, that kind of sensory gap can be dangerous—especially if an older driver fails to see you at an intersection or doesn’t hear you approaching.

  • Slower reflexes and cognitive changes – Reaction time matters when you’re behind the wheel, especially around motorcycles. If an older driver hesitates, turns too late, or gets confused in traffic, it can lead to a serious crash.

  • Dismissing concerns – Some seniors may push back against family or doctor recommendations to stop driving. That decision–however understandable–can put others at risk, especially riders who are already more exposed on the road.

  • Trouble with modern vehicles – Newer cars come with advanced features that can actually make driving more complicated for someone unfamiliar with the tech. Misusing safety systems or relying on them too heavily can lead to mistakes.
