Elderly Man Dies of Injuries After Two-Vehicle DUI Accident in Medical Lake

June 26, 2025

Drivers that are impaired by drugs or alcohol are one of–if not the–biggest threat to other drivers on the road. This is true regardless of when, where, and even who is involved on the other end. And while it’s difficult for anyone to share the road with another driver that’s impaired, elderly drivers usually have an even tougher time because of their own limitations behind the wheel. This is obviously a recipe for serious accidents with bad consequences, and that’s unfortunately what happened on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

According to a story from KXLY, a 91-year-old man has died of his injuries from the June 20 crash near Medical Lake. Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers responded to the scene of the initial accident around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 20. They say that a 38-year-old woman was driving east on the I-90 off ramp when she ran a stop sign and collided with the 91-year-old man who was driving west on Salnave Road. The collision sent the man’s car into a light pole and caused the car to rollover. Ambulance crews transported both drivers to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

The man later died of his injuries, while the woman is expected to be charged with DUI and vehicular homicide. In addition to being impaired, she was also not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

When Do Most DUI Accidents Happen in Medical Lake?

The story above unfortunately shows just how dangerous a DUI accident can be. But what’s more alarming is the timing. A DUI crash during midday is a bit unique, but as a driver, you always have to be ready. Part of being ready is understanding when these kinds of accidents are more likely to happen:

  • Weekends – This is when alcohol-related crashes tend to spike, especially near local bars or during events that happen around town.

  • Holiday weekends and community events – Times like the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, or Founders Day celebrations can bring increased traffic and alcohol use.

  • Rural routes and highways after dark – Roads like SR-902 or West Medical Lake Road may see DUI incidents when visibility is low and traffic enforcement is lighter.

In a smaller community like Medical Lake, where roads connect to more rural areas or military bases, drivers might be especially tempted to drink and drive during the above timeframes. But again, an impaired driving crash can happen at any time. When it does, someone you care about could be injured–or tragically lose their life.
