How Common Are Left Turn Crashes In The USA?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates over 35 percent of car crashes in the USA happen at intersections. Well over 450,000 intersection crashes happen when one driver is attempting to make a left turn per year.

There are many reasons why left turn crashes are so common and fatal. Many drivers involved in these crashes say they couldn’t see the other vehicle or that they misjudged the other driver’s speed. Not yielding right-of-way is another common reason for left turn crashes.

Of course, distracted driving is a major cause behind crashes at intersections nowadays. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that almost 10 Americans die in a crash related to distracted driving every day.
