Car Accidents During Winter Weather In Spokane County

February 17, 2021

Some drivers in Spokane park their cars when the weather gets icy or snowy, others head out onto slick roads seemingly just for the thrill of it. If you’re careful, it’s usually not the glazed-over roads that cause you to wreck. It’s usually the careless and reckless motorists who still operate their vehicles as if it’s a dry sunny day that puts you in danger.

They can be traveling too fast or be moving between lanes in an irresponsible manner given conditions and collide with your vehicle. The consequences can be severe and in bad weather, emergency crews may have a difficult time reaching you quickly if you’ve been hurt.

Three Highway Crashes In Winter Weather Around Spokane

Scary conditions on local highways lead to a series of accidents on Spokane County highways and interstates on Tuesday afternoon. The Spokesman-Review reported on four winter weather crashes over the course of an hour happening around 4 p.m. on February 17, 2021. The accidents caused major backups and also endangered the lives of those involved.

Just before 4 p.m., the Washington State Patrol responded to a collision involving a commercial vehicle and a car on Dishman Mica Road, south of Spokane Valley. The car’s driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) alerted travelers to a vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 395, north of Spokane beyond the Wandermere Bridge. No other details on the crash were reported but snowy, foggy conditions were noted.

Five minutes later WSDOT posted a warning about a crash on I-90 near Liberty Lake at milepost 298. The cause of the crash and if there were any injuries were not immediately known.

A short time later a third collision on I-90 left one car on the left shoulder and one car on the right shoulder near the Broadway exit.

Support for Winter Weather Accident Victims in Spokane

If you are hurt in an accident during terrible conditions, don’t think you’ll have to bear the burdens of your medical and financial recovery alone. Insurance companies for at-fault drivers may try to blame “mother nature” for an accident their policyholder caused. Don’t fall for this.

All drivers are required to adjust their speeds based on conditions. They must travel at a slow enough speed to be able to keep control of their vehicles, be able to stop for traffic lights and be able to avoid crashing into others. When they travel beyond what’s reasonable for conditions they can be held liable for the damages and injuries they cause.

Despite the evidence or a police accident report, insurance adjusters can still try to get you to take responsibility for part of your accident. They do this in hopes that they can cut the compensation they should be paying you by 25%, 50%, or even 100% to save their employer money. You could end up paying for every hospital bill and trying to make up your lost hours at work all by yourself.

Allow an attorney to take up your case, gather evidence, and make sure your innocence can’t be questioned. Your attorney can also make sure insurance companies can’t use their usual tricks to deny you the compensation you need to make a full recovery from another driver’s mistake.
