What is whiplash?

Whiplash is most commonly experienced in car accidents, especially when a vehicle is rear-ended.

The sudden, unexpected back and forth motion of the head puts significant strain on the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck, causing them to stretch or tear.

Sometimes symptoms of whiplash, such as stiffness or soreness, clear up by themselves in a matter of days, weeks, or months. In other cases, this sudden hyperextension and hyperflexion injury results in chronic pain which can last 5, 10, 15 years, or even a lifetime.

Long term and permanent whiplash injury or neck injury symptoms may include shooting pain, burning sensation, tingling, numbness, limited range of motion, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, headaches, or cognitive dysfunction.
