South Hill Pedestrian Accidents

July 21, 2020

At some point during the day, almost all of us are considered pedestrians.  Whether we are walking the sidewalks of Spokane or driving somewhere and then getting out of the safety of our vehicle.

As pedestrians, we are always at risk when we are near traffic.  It puts us in close proximity to vehicles moving much faster than us and protected by much more than what the human body can offer.

The hazards only appear to be getting worse.  The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 6,283 pedestrian fatalities in 2018.  Researchers say that was the highest number of deaths since 1990.

Spokane Pedestrian Hit on the South Hill

An elderly woman was critically injured after getting hit by a car on the South Hill, Friday, July 17, 2020. KREM-TV reported on the accident along Southeast Boulevard near East 27th Avenue.

Spokane Police say a male driver was headed northbound on Southeast Boulevard just after noon when he struck the woman near the Rockcliffe Apartments.  The circumstances of what caused the collision weren’t immediately known.  The victim was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

The driver wasn’t hurt. He remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Protection for Pedestrians Hit by a Driver

These tragic cases illustrate just how vulnerable we are as pedestrians.  The NHTSA found that in 2017,  a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes in traffic crashes.

We may just be seeking exercise or we may be walking to the store or bus stop, when suddenly our ability to walk at all may be threatened.  A careless driver can fail to see us and cause a devastating collision.

The recovery can be long and expensive. The goal is to get back on your feet and walking again, but even that may take a while. A victim will have to consider filing a claim against the at-fault driver to get help with these costs. If not, a victim can end up facing the bills and the recovery alone.

Deadline To File A Claim in A Pedestrian Accident

In the State of Washington, there is a three-year statute of limitations for any injury to person or property claims. There are exceptions to this and situations where one may have more or less time. We recommend contacting a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible after an accident because the longer you wait, the harder it’ll be to obtain evidence and recover documents.
