When you ride a bicycle, motorcycle, or scooter through certain areas of Spokane, you have to be extremely careful. Not only are you vulnerable to accidents, but the nature of these accidents means your injuries are likely to be more serious.
One such accident happened on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 in downtown Spokane, according to a story from KXLY. The Spokane Police Department (SPD) responded to a call of an accident between a truck and a person on a scooter near Deaconess Hospital on 4th Avenue and Monroe Street.
According to the SPD, the person on the scooter was riding near the intersection when they were hit by a truck. The person on the scooter was pronounced dead at the scene by investigators, while the driver of the truck remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation. 4th Avenue is currently closed while SPD continues its investigation into the accident.
What Are Your Legal Options After a Scooter Accident?
Riding a scooter is a popular way of getting around downtown Spokane, but as the above story shows, it’s not without serious risks. Legally speaking, you have the same rights as any other pedestrian or bicyclist when you’re riding a scooter. This gives you the legal option to file an injury claim if you’re hurt because of a driver or someone else’s negligence.
Before you get to that point, though, you need to make sure to do a few things first:
- Get medical help right away at the scene, then go to the hospital for more care if needed.
- Call the police to get details and clear the area.
- If you rented the scooter, get maintenance information from the rental company.
- Write down what happened before the accident.
- Take photos and videos of the accident, your injuries, and any damage.
- Share contact and insurance details with others involved.
Scooter accidents can cause serious injuries like head injuries, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), broken bones, neck or spinal injuries, and cuts and bruises. After addressing your health and safety, consider your legal options. You don’t have to hire a lawyer, but having one can be very helpful.
