When you’re driving in Spokane, you have certain expectations of those you share the road with, namely that they’ll do what they’re supposed to do. This isn’t just a polite understanding, but a legal duty. Once you decide to get behind the wheel (or even before), you need to be in the right condition.
Unfortunately, not everyone follows this responsibility, and it frequently causes accidents. According to a story from KREM 2, a man was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, attempting to evade a police car, and hit and run after he ran a red light and collided with another vehicle in downtown Spokane on Monday, May 20, 2024. The Spokane Police Department (SPD) responded to the call of a red jeep driving recklessly on West Pacific Avenue around 2:00 p.m. Once the police arrived, the man driving the jeep cut through a gas station parking lot and began speeding west on Pacific avenue, ignoring the lights and sirens. After turning onto Washington Avenue, he was able to elude the police, who stopped chasing him.
Later that same day, the man eventually crashed into another vehicle, causing it to flip and trapping the occupants inside. One passenger was able to get out of the vehicle, but the driver had to be removed. They were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The man driving the jeep attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was later arrested by Pasco Police Department (PPD) deputies and taken to Spokane County Jail. He was later found to have 15 misdemeanors and 10 felonies on his record across three different states.
What Should You Do If You’re in a DUI Hit and Run Accident?
Not surprisingly, a DUI is one of the most common reasons that a person tries to flee the scene after a car accident. And while it can leave you feeling extremely helpless, there’s actually a few things you can do to help your situation:
- Check yourself and any passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call an ambulance right away to stabilize injuries.
- Try to remember details about the other vehicle, such as the make, model, color, and license plate number.
- Call the local police as soon as possible. Give them any information you have about the other vehicle and driver, as well as details from any witnesses.
- Take photos of the accident scene, including damage to your vehicle, skid marks, and road debris.
- Contact your insurance company and report the accident, providing them with all relevant information, including the police report number.
- Keep records of all medical bills, vehicle repair costs, and other expenses related to the accident.
