DUI Crash in Spokane Valley Injures Two, Including Driver

October 18, 2024

In the vast majority of DUI accidents, the driver that’s under the influence escapes with only minor injuries, or at least injuries less serious than others involved. It’s one of the most frustrating parts of any DUI accident, including one that happened recently in Spokane Valley.

According to a story from KREM, a driver suspected of being under the influence was arrested and cited for a hit-and-run on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene of the accident, which happened at the intersection of North Corbin Road and East Appleway Avenue. The driver that was impaired, a 28-year-old man, ran a red light, crashing into an SUV and flipping it onto its side. The man continued on to South Steen Road, where deputies caught up with him after witnesses followed him.

After being stopped, the man was slurring his speech and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, along with bloodshot, watery eyes. The driver in the SUV suffered minor injuries, while the man driving the other car was taken to a hospital to take care of cuts to his forehead. He was later arrested for felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence before being booked into Spokane County Jail.

What Needs to Be Done After a DUI Accident in Spokane?

Most people in Spokane understand that driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal, but as the story above shows, this knowledge doesn’t stop them from doing it. Unfortunately, this puts everyone at risk. So, you might be injured by someone that’s impaired. The question then becomes, what do you need to do? The answer is to take the following steps:

  • Call 911 – Dial 911 so an ambulance and the police can come to help. Let the dispatcher know the other driver might be under the influence.

  • Work with police – Make sure the police record that the other driver may have been impaired. Ask for a copy of their report, including any sobriety test results to show that the other driver was indeed impaired.

  • Take photos and videos – Take pictures and videos of the accident scene, including any damage to the cars, the road conditions, and any injuries.

  • Be careful with what you say – When you talk to the police and insurance reps, be mindful of what you say, as it could impact your claim.

Doing these things can help you handle the accident properly and protect your rights. But again, these accidents are typically pretty traumatic. This makes everything else harder, and on top of that, it’s going to be hard to get information out of the impaired driver–if they stay at the scene in the first place.
