Delivery Driver Killed After Being Hit By Car on North Tschirley Road in Spokane Valley

January 10, 2025

When you’re walking along the streets and roads of Spokane Valley, you have to always be on the lookout for moving cars. This is even more true if you work as a delivery driver, but no matter how careful you are, you might find yourself in a spot or situation where other drivers can’t avoid you as you make your way back to your car.

A story from KHQ detailed a recent accident that left a delivery driver fatally injured after a car collided with him on North Tschirley Road. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) responded to the accident scene after getting reports of a collision between a car and pedestrian around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2025.

Investigators say that the driver of a Subaru was heading north when he saw a Kia parked and blocking part of the road. The Kia belonged to the delivery driver, but as the man driving the Subaru tried to get around the Kia, he struck the delivery driver. The Subaru driver told the SCSO that he tried to swerve to avoid the delivery driver, but couldn’t. He also told deputies that he attempted CPR, but the delivery driver died at the scene before medics arrived.

The Subaru driver wasn’t charged by SCSO, but the investigation into the accident is ongoing. The Spokane County Medical Examiner announced that they will release the identity of the delivery driver when appropriate.

What Can You Do As a Pedestrian to Avoid Accidents?

Obviously, you can’t always avoid a moving car when you’re going back to your car after dropping off a delivery. Yet, as stories like the one above show, these accidents can mean fatal injuries–even at lower speeds.

What’s more, you’re not at-fault when there’s an accident as a pedestrian. But, there are a few things that you can do to protect yourself in this situation:

  • Stay alert – The most you can really do is stay alert as you head back to your car. Look both ways, and do everything you can to make yourself noticeable to drivers. You’ll also want to stay away from texting or being on your phone as you try to cross streets or are anywhere near the road.

  • Don’t make any sudden movements – Don’t dart out into the street, and try to not make any quick movements so drivers can react if they see you.

  • Stay on sidewalks – If there’s a sidewalk, stay on it. If there’s not, make sure to always move in the direction of oncoming traffic so you can at least see that a driver is heading toward you.

Every pedestrian accident is different, but many are caused by similar factors. If you’ve been in an accident, the most important thing is to prioritize your health and safety. Once you’re safe, reach out to our Spokane pedestrian accident lawyers for guidance and support to protect your rights.
