A crash at a 4-way intersection in Spokane seriously injured one cyclist on July 2, 2018.
According to KHQ-Q6, this crash occurred close to Rowan and Belt at around 8AM. Allegedly, a car driver failed to yield at the intersection and hit the cyclist. First-responders immediately transported the cyclist to a local hospital with serious injuries. Thankfully, the cyclist was wearing a helmet and is expected to survive his injuries.
The car driver involved in this crash remained on the scene when police arrived. Local authorities are now investigating the cause of this crash.
Cyclist Safety Data In Spokane County
As more Americans opt to ride their bikes to and from work, there has been an increase in the number of cyclist injuries and fatalities. The CDC found that about 1,000 American cyclists die every year in collisions. Research from the NHTSA has shown that at least 70 percent of these cyclist deaths occur in urban areas like Spokane.
Spokane’s SRTC Collision Data revealed that 75 percent of cyclist collisions happened within Spokane’s city center. A few of the most common areas for cyclist collisions include Argonne, Downtown, North Division, and Franklin Park.
Spokane law enforcement has discovered that most cyclists involved in crashes are between the ages of 10-17 or 20-24. It’s also far more likely for a man to be seriously injured in a cyclist collision than a female.
The easiest thing cyclists can do to protect themselves is to wear a helmet. A new study out of Australia’s University of New South Wales found that helmets cut the risk of traumatic head injuries by about 70 percent. Spokane County is one of many counties in the State of Washington that requires all cyclists to wear DOT-approved helmets while riding.
