Accident Dangers on I-90 Near the Spokane International Airport

August 16, 2022

Travel on Interstate 90 is hazardous in the best of conditions. Cars travel at interstate speeds and far beyond the speed limits, making any collision that much more devastating.

When drivers get careless in the lanes by looking at a cellphone or allowing themselves to become drowsy, the chances of a major accident increase dramatically. One small veer off course can cause a terrible accident that may leave drivers and passengers hurt and even fighting for their lives.

Three-Vehicle Spokane Accident Kills One and Injuries Three

A weekend accident near the Spokane International Airport claimed one driver’s life and sent three others to the hospital. Big Country News reports the collision occurred just after midnight early Saturday morning along Interstate 90 on August 13, 2022.

The Washington State Patrol responded to the accident in the westbound lanes near mile marker 278.1. Investigators determined that a 63-year-old Spokane woman driving in the middle lane suddenly swerved into the vehicle next to her. That second vehicle had a 21-year-old driver and a passenger inside. A third vehicle driven by a 37-year-old woman from Cheney traveling behind the first two cars ended up striking the first car.

Tragically, the 21-year-old driver from Clayton inside the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people involved in the accident were rushed to area hospitals.

The 63-year-old Spokane woman driving the initial vehicle has been charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Support for Victims and Their Families After an I-90 Accident

Families who have been forced to suffer the loss of a loved one due to a careless driver’s mistake are protected under Washington state law. Close relatives may file a wrongful death claim to seek money to help pay for burial costs and leftover emergency response fees. They may also secure funds to help protect family members in the future when they’ll be without the weekly income a loved one would have provided.

Surviving victims of Spokane accidents are forced to worry over the enormous totals on hospital bills just as they begin to miss valuable time at work while trying to heal.  Victims may file a claim for damages against an at-fault driver’s insurance provider. This claim provides for the payment of medical care now and any care expected to be required in the future. The loss of wages at work can also factor into a claim settlement. Physical and emotional trauma suffered can also earn compensation.

Victims can seek assistance from an insurance company, but insurance agents won’t be eager to provide what’s really necessary to afford a full physical and financial recovery. They can also withhold money from families who are struggling to stay afloat financially after losing a loved one. It often takes a legal expert working on behalf of the victims and their families to make sure insurance companies provide what’s fair after a serious accident.
